Making
Strides: Toward Structural Reform in Minority Graduate Education

Making Strides
is a new Internet resource published by the American Association
for the Advancement of Science and supported by the National Science
Foundation's Minority Graduate Education Program. The goal of Making
Strides is to identify and disseminate factors that affect minority
students' underrepresentation in the fields of science, mathematics,
and engineering (SME), as well as the successful strategies that
lead to their increased representation in SME doctoral programs
and careers, in particular, the professoriate.
American
Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES)
A national, nonprofit
organization which nurtures building of community by bridging science
and technology with traditional Native values. Through its educational
programs, AISES provides opportunities for American Indians and
Native Alaskans to pursue studies in science, engineering, business
and other academic arenas. Through a variety of educational programs,
AISES offers financial, academic and cultural support to American
Indians and Alaska Natives from middle school through graduate school.
Association
of American Universities (AAU)
The AAU currently consists
of sixty American universities and two Canadian universities. Approximately
half are public institutions and half are private. The association
serves its members in two major ways. First, it assists them in
developing national policy positions on issues that relate to academic
research and graduate and professional education. Second, it provides
them with a forum for discussing a broad range of other institutional
issues, such as undergraduate education.
Association
for Support of Graduate Students (ASGS)
ASGS is a service organization
of graduate students, graduate-student organizations (GSOs), and
graduate-degree-granting institutions. ASGS services and products
assist students to complete their theses and obtain their degrees,
produce the highest quality of theses, and improve their lives during
the thesis process.
Association
of Teachers of Preventive Medicine (ATPM)
ATPM is the national
professional association dedicated to advancing individual and community
health promotion and disease prevention in the education of physicians
and other health professionals.ATPM offers a variety of training
opportunities in public health and preventive medicine for graduate
students and early career professionals, as well as established
academic faculty, physicians, and other public health professionals.
Participants of the program gain valuable experience at highly respected
public health organizations and federal agencies.
CEA-CREST
Center for Environmental Analysis - Centers of Research Excellence
in Science and Technology California State University
The mission of CEA-CREST
is to (1) increase the numbers of minority citizens embarking on
carers in the environmental sciences (2) serve as a key technical
and personnel resource for the many academic, governmental and industry
programs of Southern California, and (3) conduct innovative multi
disciplinary research into the pressing environmental problems of
the region. The Center achieves these goals by supporting fully
integrated research teams composed of outstanding faculty from Cal
State LA and regional campuses of the University of California,
minority graduates and undergraduate students, and a complete technical
support staff. Facilities and equipment provide support for Geographic
Information Systems analaysis, simlation modeling, environmental
chemistry, molecular genetics, remote sensing, plant physiology
and marine biology. Fellowships and other means of student support
are provided.
Commission
on Professionals in Science and Technology (CPST)
This website provides
information on the Commission's activities, services, and publications,
as well as an online guide to other organizations, both public and
private, that produce information on the education and employment
of scientists and engineers
Council
of Graduate Schools
The Council of Graduate
Schools (CGS) is dedicated to the improvement and advancement of
graduate education. Its members are colleges and universities engaged
in research, scholarship and the preparation of candidates for advanced
degrees. This website offers a plethora of information for faculty
and students.
GEM
Consortium
The National Consortium
for Graduates Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science,
Inc., offers an array of services, including fellowships for graduate
study. As noted on the site, GEM’s mission “is to enhance the value
of the nation’s human capital in engineering and science by increasing
the participation of underrepresented minorities in graduate education.”

This site is dedicated
to post-baccalaureate educational programs; arranged in a directory
format with listing categorized by curriculum and where necessary,
by geography.
Graduate
School Guide
This site is “a comprehensive
online guide to Doctoral, Master’s & Professional degree programs.”
The site is separated by fields of study, school profiles and financing.
HACU
- Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities
HACU represents Hispanic-Serving
Institutions (HSIs) where Hispanics constitute a minimum of 25 percent
of the total enrollment at either the graduate or undergraduate
level and Associate members where Hispanics constitute a minimum
of 10 percent of the total enrollment; member institutions are located
in the United States and Puerto Rico. Several of HACU’s goals
follow: Promote the development of member colleges and universities;
improve access to and the quality of postsecondary educational opportunities
for Hispanic students; and meet the needs of business, industry
and government through the development and sharing of resources,
information and expertise.
National
Action Council for Minorities in Engineering
A not-for-profit corporation
with a commitment to excellence in education, NACME’s mission embraces
the fact that technical work force strength will determine world
leadership into the new century, that the nation’s economic productivity
rests on the quality of the scientists and engineers produced, and
that success depends on the ability to utilize human resources from
all segments of the population.

Association of Graduate Professional Students
Promotes the interests
of graduate students and acts as a clearinghouse for information.
This website offers a plethora of information ranging from documents
on tax regulations to international student issues, teaching resources,
financial aid, TA/RA issues, legislative updates, and an online
jobbank.

England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE)
This site offers a plethora
of information, such as detailed listings of opportunities for minority
students.
ScienceCareers.Org
This is weekly online
publication, previously known as Next Wave, covers scientific training,
career development, and the science job market. ScienceCareers.Org
is published by Science magazine and the American Association for
the Advancement of Science. It is a not-for-profit publication.

This site offers information
on college life for students in an interactive format.
