When I first received Made
to Measure, by Philip Ball, I fingered through the pages and quickly
noticed that the book had a limited number of glossy illustrations. I thought
it would be extremely dull and placed it on the edge of my desk, hoping
it would go away. Was I ever mistaken! Made to Measure has an appeal
that won't let you stop reading once you start. It's a lucky thing that
each chapter is self-contained, so there are periodic stopping places for
the marathon reader. In this book, Ball has assembled a collection of "snapshots"
of material science. His disclaimer states that he cannot cover all subjects
in one volume. However, he has identified major and important trends in
the development of new materials. Advanced students and scientists of all
ages will find the book a fascinating and intellectual work about invention
and the craft of making new and exciting materials. I dare anyone to stop
reading once they have begun!—Norman B. Smith, Biotek Associates International,
