This second book in the Exploratorium
Science-at-Home series presents a variety of fun science projects for children
and families. All projects use simple, readily available supplies and provide
ample opportunity for exploring common scientific phenomena in a way that
will appeal to kids of all ages. Some titles give the flavor of the volume:
"Flipping Shapes," "Edible Architecture," "Geodesic Gumdrops," "Fun in
the Tub," and "Submarine Egg." Some 50 projects and activities are presented
in 7 chapters. After an introduction explaining basic concepts presented
in each chapter, each project is explained under headings of "What Do I
Need?" "What Do I Do?" and "What's Going On?" (in a clear succinct explanation
for older kids or adults). Projects are appropriately divided into two
self-explanatory categories: "Kids Can Do It" and "Exploring Together."
Each chapter ends with a "Family Field Trip," on which families can find
examples in their immediate surroundings of what they have been studying.
Helpful illustrations, suggestions on which projects to try on a rainy
day or a sunny day, alone or with a group of kids, suggestions for further
explorations (including tips for teachers and suggested readings), and
an index all combine to make this an exceedingly user-friendly book. Bring
on more!—John H. Nickles, Hudson Valley Community College, Troy, NY
